In a film coater, film splitting occurs in the application nip. Part of the metered layer is transferred to the paper while the residual layer (coat film balance) sticks to the transfer roll. There is a severe lack of knowledge concerning film transfer dynamics, in particular the factors controlling the transfer rate, the effects of air entrapment, and the interaction between the colour and the web. Film splitting may generate misting and so-called orange peel defects at the coat surface.

Une partie de la couche dosée est transférée sur le papier pendant que la couche résiduelle (le reste du film) colle sur le rouleau de transfert. Les connaissances sur la dynamique de transfert du film au papier sont encore insuffisantes, notamment en ce qui concerne la vitesse de transfert, l’effet du captage d’air et l’interaction entre la sauce et la feuille. La séparation du film peut causer un brouillard à la surface de la couche ainsi que des effets de peau d’orange.
