Explanation:
D'un point de vue technique je suis 100% d'accord avec la proposition d'Yves. Cependant en poussant la réflexion un poil plus loin, je me suis demandé quelle traduction purement française pourrait être appliquée. Et j'ai trouvé le mot "sonde" et son verbe "sonder". D'autant que, si je ne m'abuse, les sous-mariniers utilisent un "ping" pour obtenir un écho acoustique de leur proie (Source: "A la poursuite d'octobre rouge").
C'est finalement un peu le même principe aplliqué à l'informatique: sonder une adresse de destination ne me semble pas si loin de la réalité.

Basically, it's a way of testing whether a connection is valid.

For example, you ping a server (from the command prompt) and the server will respond to indicate that it is active and online.

ping = utilitaire ping


Explanation:
Utilitaire permettant de vérifier si la connexion à un serveur distant que l'utilisateur a demandée a pu être établie.

Note: en anglais, ping signifie "packet Internet Groper". Cet utilitaire fonctionne sur le modèle du sonar et tirerait également son nom de l'analgie avec le bruit émis par cet appareil.

Explanation:
The answers given by Mary and Connie are far from being wrong, I just want to point out that "ping" is available as a standard command on the command line of Windows 2000 and some other operating systems (e.g. Unix).
This is the reason why it became a verb : it is widely used for testing purpose.
For example if you assign to a device (that you whish to connect on a local network) an IP adress and a subnet mask. If this has been done properly when you "ping" that device from another one, it will basically reply "you XXXX have just pinged me" to the pinging device.


As in French it is impossible to use a verb like "pinger" or "pinguer" you have to use "envoyer une commande ping" even if it is quite long to write.

En cherchant "commande ping" sur Google francophone, vous trouverez d'innombrables sites ; en voici un pour l'exemple :
