English term or phrase: channel access overhead
In conventional wireless transmission methods, the amount of channel access overhead required to transmit each packet is fixed, regardless of the size of the packet itself.
As data rates increase, the time required to transmit each packet shrinks, but the overhead cost remains the same, potentially becoming much greater than the packet itself at the high speeds delivered with 802.11n.
