English term or phrase: stab stitch
No real context available, unfortunately, except that it applies to a purse or a bag in this particular case.

It occurs in a suppliers' guide for a UK chainstore. Four examples of accessories are provided where specific rules apply concerning delivery.
These four items are:
"Contract stitch purse / Stab stitch purse / Mick leather ruc sac in tan / N/S stab stitch bag in black".

Many thanks for any assistance.

point de gant
Explanation:
Apparently it is point de gant even when this stitch is done on items other than gloves.

Although this stitch looks like a running stitch, it is actually sewn differently.

With a running stitch, the needle is inserted sideways so that the needle can go down through the material and then be reinserted back up to the top of the material, usually several times, before the needle and thread is pulled completely through the material being sewn. See the photo at MRL Translations reference: http://coutureetcie.canalblog.com/archives/techniques/index....

With a stab stitch, the needle is held perpendicular to the material so the needle is inserted straight down and the needle and thread are pulled through; then, the needle is inserted straight up through the material and the needle and thread are pulled through. See the photo at http://vintagesewing.info/1950s/50-hmg/hmg-01.html

References:
A close examination of a hand-made glove will soon show that the seams appear to be worked in running stitch — that is, small even stitches that are the same size on each side of the seam. (Diagram 3.) Actually the stitch is called "stab stitch" and it is worked in a special way. The two pieces of leather are held together wrong sides facing and the edges absolutely level. The needle is then pushed through the two layers at right angles and the thread is pulled through. (Diagram 4.) The second half of the stitch is made by pushing the needle through from the back to the front, again with the needle at right angles. Thus each stitch is made in two movements. Never try to use ordinary running stitch, in which a small amount of the seam is taken up by the needle, as even thin leather is too thick for this to be successful.

neutral  Beila Goldberg: Justement, ce n'est pas une piqûre apparente ou surpiqûre : tout le travail est fait à l'envers et l'on ne voit que le petit point du fil.
