English term or phrase:has more to the town
Bonjour,
Je ne suis pas certaine du sens de cette phrase "Both magical and legendary, Bali has more to the town than its impressive rice terraces, volcanic lakes, spectacular tropical beaches, ancient temples and buildings."
L'expression "has more to the town" m'ennuie, est-ce que cela signifie que Bali a plus à offrir grâce à ses villes que les rizières, les lacs volcaniques, etc.? J'ai un peu de mal à trouver le sens exact ici.
Merci pour vos réponses. Je pensais effectivement rester sur "Bali vous offre bien plus que..." C'est ce qui me semble le plus logique dans ces conditions.
if you're struggling to find the exact meaning, that's no surprise, it does seem oddly written.
personally, for a text like this, I would not feel constrained to achieve an exact correspondence even if the source were clear and well-written; so I think you will be entirely justified in overlooking the word "town", and reading it as "... there's more to Bali than ..."
The source text is potentially confusing; if it is without error, then it implies that they are talking about the town of Bali, rather than the whole island; and yes, it would mean that the town of Bali has more to offer than...
However, that seems slightly ridiculous, and I think there must be one of two possible errors:
either, the word 'town' is wrong, and it should have been 'island' — this seems an unlikely error, unless of course it was translated from some other language where such an ambiguity might exist.
or else the whole sentence is seriously flawed, and they wanted to say "...more than just the town, with its..."
quelque part.
