"It’s fiendishly difficult to get up the Rothorn, but dangerously easy to get down. Left to itself the train would hurtle down like a bobsleigh. The Swiss came up with an ingenious solution; ***the engine always stays on the downhill side of the carriages.*** That way the engine is the driving force on the way up and it becomes an airbrake on the descent.
When running downhill the steam to the cylinders is cut off, but the engine is left in forward gear. The piston still moves but now it compresses the air, which has a braking effect."

Donc le moteur est derrière les wagons en montée, mais les précède en descente. Simple à comprendre, mais comment intégrer "pente" ou "descente", ou autre dans une phrase cohérente et compréhensible ? "Du côté de la pente" ou "le plus près de la pente" ne me semblent pas clair.

agree  xxxdf49f: du côté aval - et "en descente" fonctionne avec "running downhill" - et il s'agit de la locomotive bien sûr (pas de moteur :)))
