Explanation:
The F40C was GM-EMD's first use of a constant speed engine, which also drives an auxiliary head end power generator. The F40C's remain in Metra service until their retirement in 2004, while problems with derailments resulted in Amtrak trading in its SDP40F's for four axle F40PH's.

en fait, "Head End Power" concerne plutôt les trains et vient de "Hotel Electric power" :

Hotel Electric Power (HEP) is a maritime term referring to electricity generated and used aboard a ship for purposes other than propulsion such as lighting, communications, climate control, refrigeration, water desalination and treatment, entertainment, etc. The term has also been applied in railway passenger train usage meaning lighting, climate control, water heating, cooking power, etc. In the USA however, the same definition with the same initials (HEP) is generally understood to stand for Head End Power.
