I believe it refers to an anatomic term descriving one specific part (toe) of an animal (in this case a lizard):

En anatomie, les structures sont souvent décrites en fonction de leur position par rapport à la ligne médiane du corps (axe médian) ; médial (ou interne) = proche de la ligne médiane - latéral (ou externe) = éloigné de la ligne médiane.
