"In addition to the envisaged shading from the proximity of the buildings, the windows are provided with mushrabias and additional shading devices to add character to the buildings and provide privacy from buildings opposite." - "mushrabia" seems to be some kind of wood. Does anybody know what's this called in German?

Mushrabije (arab.) nennt man in der traditionellen arabischen Architektur dekorative Holzgitter vor Fenstern der Häuser und Paläste. Sie werden meist aus geschnitzten oder gedrechselten Holzstücken zusammengesetzt, die zu geometrischen Mustern angeordnet sind. Sie dienen dem Sonnenschutz und der Belichtung, der Belüftung der Wohnung und der Wahrung der Privatsphäre.

Explanation:
die typischen im arabischen Raum vorkommende Gitterwände und Fenster die Schatten spenden und gleichzeitig Luft als Kühlung durchlassen. Mushrabia ist, zumindest im arabischen Raum, ein Begriff!

Explanation:
The more common English and German spellings are as above.

Al-Mashrabiya is an element of Arab-Islamic architecture. It consists of carved wood used mainly as a sort of screening on windows.

Being an Egyptian, I should have mentioned, as the article above confirms, that it's actually an Egyptian tradition!

Here's a definition in German:

mashrabiya (arabisch): dicht „gewebte“ Holzgitter, mit denen Maueröffnungen, Fenster und Erker in der islamischen Architektur verschlossen werden. Filtern und streuen grelles Tageslicht. Durch die können die Bewohner hinaussehen, ohne selbst den Blicken ausgesetzt zu sein. Auch häufig verwendet, um die Bereiche der Frauen im Haus sichtgeschützt abzugrenzen. Sehr gängiges Element der islamischen Architektur in fast allen Regionen. Begriff ist abgeleitet vom arabischem Wort für trinken, da hinter die Wasserkrüge gestellt wurden, um sie im Luftzug zu kühlen.

disagree  Goldcoaster: wieso nicht das Kind beim Namen nennen (Gitter, gewebt)? Für den Laien ist der Ausdruck nichtssagend!

  -> Weil es viel mehr ist als nur das. Eine Fussnote waere vielleicht angemessen, um all das zu erklaeren was Mashrabia ist. Und der englische Text sagt ja auch nicht mehr dazu!! (I think your disagree is mighty unfair, a neutral would have sufficed)
