English to German translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Architecture / building design and construction
English term or phrase:upscale, ground-up residential home
kommt in einem CV vor:
While working in XXX, I was introduced to interesting design problems, such as the intricate detailing of custom furniture/cabinetry, the precision of technical/contract furniture, and the ever-changing construction documents for upscale, ground-up residential homes.
@Diana: There's not such thing as a "ground-up house" in AE (from the ground up is something else.) Makes me think that something went wrong, and the house fell into a big grinder... ;-) Good nght! Or day, as may be
Theresa's idea about the houses being built "from scratch" on site instead of being prefabricated sounds good to me, it would help to emphasize the exclusivenesss and solidity of the undertaking.
The fact that I hadn't heard of the term can be explained by my "Britishness". It is also possible that the AE expression is nearer to German than a BE one would be (viz "hopefully" etc.).
Thanks, Bernhard - shudder, but it need not be about housing in NYC ;-) If he went to Cooper Union, he could have learned about actual, sustainable stuff. Sorry, I'mm outta ammo!
Got it from another source for upscale. I am trying to avoid sounding snobbish but instead want to say something positive about the style of the buildings. But it's stretching it too much, probably.
Hi Diana. It is possible that for some reason, the CV includes passages that were taken from a re-translation. However, I found "upscale, ground-up residential building(s)" in a few genuine American publications (for one, see my link above). Not often though, and I haven't found the German equivalent used together with the English original on any website. Thanks for your input.:)
Could the source by any chance be a re-translation ? I found this article (badly) translated from German where "from the ground-up" seems to mean "vom Grund auf." Sonst kenne ich diesen Begriff im Englischen nicht.

Bernhard Sulzer's old entry - "upscale, ground-up residential homes" => "exklusive Wohnneubauten / bezüglich der Neuerrichtung von exklusiven Wohnbauten"
