Inzwischen glaube ich eher, dass du es mit "Klerus der Stadt" oder "Klerus von Florenz" übersetzen könntest. "Metropolitan" ist hier wahrscheinlich im Sinn von Hauptstadt gemeint (Florenz war ja damals Hauptstadt des Großherzogtums Toscana).
