Watercolour paints are enduringly popular as they offer soft, subtle ***colour washes*** and translucent colour effects. Watercolours can be mixed with colour pencil to good effect but should be allowed to dry beforehand. It’s best to apply watercolour as a ***wash*** without going over it too much as it is not intended to produce an opaque surface.

Lavierung, auch Lavur (von ital. lavare ‚waschen, wischen‘, vergl. Lavoir ‚Waschschüssel‘) ist eine Maltechnik, bei der Farbe in einer sehr dünnen Konsistenz aufgebracht wird. Dadurch erreicht man eine durchscheinende Farbfläche. Lavieren bezieht sich primär auf wässrige und andere leichtflüchtige Bindemittel, dieselbe Technik in filmbildenden Schichten (Öl, Tempera) ist das Lasieren.
