English to German translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Automotive / Cars & Trucks / bearings
English term or phrase:brinnelled
Here is a good one for the glossary. Its from a automotive service manual re> transaxle
It is something that can happen to the rollers in bearings... but what??
Here is the sentence:
Inspect the gears, bearings, shafts and thrust
washers. Replace the bearings and cups if the rollers
are worn, chipped, cracked, flat spotted, or **brinnelled**, or if the bearing cage is damaged or distorted.
Explanation: Laixicon gives this, which I thing gets pretty close to what it's about.
"Brinelling:
The indentation of inner or outer race material caused by the rolling elements.
There are two types of brinelling, true brinelling and false brinelling. True is due to material deformation under excessive operating pressure, false is wear-related or vibration-related.
Brinelling - True
The indentation of inner or outer race material caused by the rolling elements.
True brinelling is the indentation of a part and the movement of material due to excessive operating pressure, impact, dropping or hammering. True brinelling is a material deformation issue where the inner or outer race material has been pushed or squashed out of place.
Brinelling - False
The indentation of inner or outer race material caused by the rolling elements.
False brinelling is the indentation of a part where the indented material has been worn away. False brinelling is a wear issue due to metal-to-metal contact and is most often caused by external vibration. False brinelling can also be caused by vibration of a stationary bearing, especially in the absence of proper lubrication.

Danke an euch Beide.
Was fuer eine Interessante Diskussion! Und auf alle Faelle sehr nuetzlich fuer den Glossar 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Moreover, I suggest using the spelling with one 'n' as it is used far more often, and also, a) because it is derived from the name of the Swedish metallurgist Brinell, and b) because it is used by major bearing manufacturers such as Timken and FAG.
IMO there is no comparable German term that is as widely used (and accepted) as 'brinelling'. Apart from the few German references for 'Rattermarken', the Laixicon entry is an important pointer.
sorry, it's not the brake system (left over from my last question) but rather the transaxle
