The developmental process of vulva in Caenorhabditis elegans is especially suitable for the study of developmental genetics, because C. elegans is transparent, making the tracing of cell lineages possible. The mutant and wild-type phenotypes are easily observable as well. As it is feasible to trace C. elegans' vulval development, research literature produced from this development is widely available and is useful for students to study certain principles in both developmental genetics and evolution.

Explanation:
Cell lineage
→ = Zellstammbaum (Abstammung)
→ eine bestimmte Zelle im Körper lässt sich auf eine bestimmte Embryozelle zurückführen (erinnert sich wo sie herkommt) (Untersuchungen bei C. Elegans → siehe Modellorganismen)
→ Bsp: Teilt sich z.B. eine Leberzelle, so wird sie sich immer weiter + weiter teilen, ohne dabei jemals etwas anderes zu werden als eine Leberzelle. Das bedeutet, dass die Identität der Leberzellen bei jeder Zellteilung erhalten bleibt. Das nennt man cell lineage. Sie ist Ausdruck dessen, dass es bei tierischen Zellen eine Art Erinnerung daran gibt, was sie vorher einmal waren.
