English to German translations [PRO] Science - Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) / biology, genetics | | English term or phrase: genetic swamping | "Perhaps the most important similarity [between the Red wolf and the wolves living in southeastern Canada] is their ability to hybridize with coyotes, making both susceptible to genetic swamping."
Kennt jemand den deutschen Fachausdruck? |
| | | genetische Verdrängung | Explanation: "genetic swamping" is not identical with "hybridization". It is a specific situation where one genetic pool of a species is by and by replaced by that of another one, which can lead to the extinction of the original species.

the result may be the genetic dilution of the rare species, a situation referred
to as "genetic swamping.

Genetic swamping is especially detrimental for plants whose natural populations have been tattered by human development. The large, previously continuous "metapopulations" of these species have been splintered into small, more or less isolated subpopulations. Small populations mean small gene pools. 'Magnus' or its equivalent comes along, swamping the species' already shrinking genetic base. Chance -- what researchers call genetic drift -- can take over, and more beneficial traits may be lost in the random recombination of genes that occurs during sexual reproduction.

Explanation: swamping wird im anderen Zusammenhang als Versumpfung, Verfälschung, Vermischung, nicht mehr reinrassig definiert (bei Sprachen z.B. Denglisch).
Bei Pflanzen wird diese Fortpflanzungs-/Weiterentwicklungsart "Hybridisierung" genannt.
