Vielen Dank, das trifft es wirklich am besten. Zwar habe ich auch "Mastbäume" gefunden, aber das scheint sich eher auf das Mästen von Hausvieh, besonders Schweinen, zu beziehen und nicht auf Wildtiere.

The acorns of the white oak make up a major component of the annual mast crop that is so important to wildlife such as deer, squirrels, birds (including ducks), rodents, etc. The wood is heavy and the species is important to the hardwood lumber industry.

"Hudewald. Bis in das 19. Jh. hatte der Wald eine große Bedeutung als Waldweide und Nährwald für das Vieh. Rinder, Pferde, Schafe und Ziegen vernichteten den Jungwuchs der Bäume und die meisten Sträucher. Nur die Mastbäume, besonders Buchen und Eichen wurden geschützt und nachgezogen, damit die Schweine mit Bucheckern und Eicheln gemästet werden konnten."
