English term or phrase: yellow squash
google.de is no help so far (neither are my numerous dictionaries); I have been searching and comparing pictures for quite a while now - and am getting nowhere. None of the pictures of "gelber Squash", "gelbe Zucchini", etc., that I have found correspond to what I know as "yellow squash" from the produce department (or from the farmers' market). Even trying to find the right Latin name seems to be impossible (there seems to be a lot of contradictory information.

The "yellow squash" sold around here resembles zucchini (i.e., it is a fairly small, longish veggie), but it doesn't have this thickened, almost leafy-looking thicker part at the neck. Pictures of "gelbe Zucchini" also show this thicker section, so I don't think "gelbe Zucchini" is going to quite cut it. What the stores sell mostly is "straightneck" and "crookneck" yellow squash (I cannot tell a difference in taste, texture or anything else though).

The crookneck yellow squash pictured there does not entirely correspond to the crooknecks sold in stores around here (Georgia, USA). The one I usually see looks exactly like the regular yellow squash - except that the neck is bent. No warts like in this picture, and not as orange.

What seems to be called gelber Squash on German websites looks more like pattypan squash to me. I also saw some another type called gelber Squash, but it also looked more like a winter squash, and not like our regular, everyday yellow squash, which is a summer squash.

es gibt auch andere Formen von yellow squash, aber die im Link ist eine gelbe Zucchini, die runden und dicklichen mit Rippen sehen eher wie eine Art Kürbis aus,

Asker: Ich werde wohl ersatzweise "gelbe Zucchini" nehmen (das Ganze ist ein Salat auf einer Speisekarte*), aber das Gleiche sind ein yellow squash und eine gelbe Zucchini nicht. Der Squash hat im Gegensatz zur Zucchini diese typische verjüngte Form. Außerdem fehlt ihm der verdickte Stielansatz der Zucchini. Zum Geschmacksunterschied kann ich nichts sagen, da ich noch nie gelbe Zucchini gegessen habe. Aber auch da gilt: es geht um einen Salat, weshalb man die einzelnen Bestandteile sicher nicht mehr ganz klar herausschmecken kann. *Da die Zutaten sicher kleingeschnitten sind, dürfte das der Sache nahe genug kommen.

neutral  Cetacea: mE ist das "gelbe Zucchini" im Glossar dieses Links eher als Ersatzvorschlag für Rezepte gemeint. Zucchini und Squash sind nicht dasselbe.

  -> Das Bild auf der von Kristina angebenen Website zeigt eindeutig eine gelbe Zucchini. Es gibt noch andere Arten von yellow squash in den USA, die einem deutschen Publikum fremd sind. Sehen eher nach Zierkürbissen aus, werden aber in USA auch gegessen.

Explanation:
Squash is kürbis or kürbispflanze in German. If you google like this (even just gelber kürbis) you will be able to see pictures too. I prefer "kürbis" instead kürbispflanze. I hope it helps. Good luck

Asker: Unfortunately, the yellow squash I am looking for is not a Kürbis. :( Take a look at the link I posted in my query - that one is the vegetable I am looking for (it's German name). I agree that both belong to the family Cucurbita, but they are definitely not the same thing. The yellow squash is approximately the size of a zucchini, i.e., quite small.
