Science - Botany
English term or phrase: extratestal
I am totally lost. It's a text about fruits and seeds of maples and it doesn't make any sense to me:

The seed wall is extratestal (i.e., the protective layer is in the outer epiderm). The mesophyll usually has a layer of small crystal cells, and the pericarp assumes the protective function of the seed coat. There is no arillus.

What does extratestal mean?
What's the difference between seed wall, pericarp, seed coat and arillus?
What is the outer epiderm?
What is the mesophyll in fruits? (I only know it in leaves)

Thank you very much for every advice!

Explanation:
seed wall = Samenhülle
testa = Testa = Samenschale = seed coat
pericarp = Perikarp = Fruchtgehäuse
arillus = Arillus = Samenmatel = seed coat
mesophyll = Mesophyll
