Ein Begriff, dessen Bedeutung ich genau kenne, aber dessen "coole" Übersetzung mir einfach nicht in den Kopf will. Euch vielleicht?
"And Pete and Caz *are roughing it* on their trek to the world’s highest mountain". Die Beiden sind zu Fuss mit Rucksack auf einem Berg zu sehen - mehr nicht.

roughing it kenne ich nur in dieser Bedeutung. Könnte man evtl. übersetzen mit Pete und Caz lassen auf ihrem Trek zum höchsten Berg der Welt jeden Komfort hinter sich.

agree  BirgitBerlin: Wohl war. Ich komme gerade von dort wieder. Komfort gibt's dort wirklich nicht! Aber das hat irgendwie nicht den gleichen Klang wie "roughing it".

Das fällt mir dazu ein. Danach wäre dann aber wohl noch eine Erklärung fällig - zum Beispiel Anjas oder Aniellos Lösung. Vorausgesetzt natürlich, Du hast die Möglichkeit, 2 Sätze draus zu machen.

Da es weiter "oben" sowieso nur noch steinig wird, könntest du auch ein Wortspiel einbauen: statt "mühsam" würde "steinig" gut passen.

Pete und Caz kämpfen sich voran, auf ihrem (steinigen) Weg zum höchsten Berggipfel der Welt voran.

Satzstellung hängt natürlich von Stil und Kontext ab.

neutral  Cilian O'Tuama: don't know where you get your 'kämpfen' from. Sleeping outdoors is an example of 'roughing it'.

  -> From the little context "Art/Literary"; literarische Übersetzungen sind selten wörtlich, und wenn man auf JEDEN Komfort verzichten muss, das hat man schwer zu KÄMPFEN!
