English term or phrase: animation vs. cartoon
In a survey it is asked which types of films the respondent prefers. The listing then is as follows
- comedy
- drama
- horror
- animation
- cartoons
.....

Animation and cartoon both translate as Zeichentrickfilm. But is there really any difference between the two (like animation is the computer generated type and cartoon the old-style hand-drawn type)?? Does any one know?

German translation:Animationsfilm vs. Zeichentrickfilm
Explanation:
animations do not necessarily need to be cartoons. In German "Zeichentrickfilme" really are films made of drawn pictures. "Animationsfilme" are animated via computers.

agree  Lonnie Legg: Posted German terms are correct. Only the 1st half explanation is (sorry). "Zeichentrick" is 2-D drawing-based (but can be computer-aided). Animation, the broader term, also includes images generated entirely in the computer, or animation of 3-D materia
