in reference to Diana's comments (actively concealing),
in German you can render it as "sich verstellende" or "vortäuschende" Las Vegas, but I think a past participle adjective also conveys this and sounds better in German:

"vorgetäuscht" would be another option

I believe it's for this context which affords some leeway for the translation.

I am thinking that "feigned appearance" is what the author means, in German vorgemacht, vorgegaukelt, vorgespielt.
In that sense, it's stronger than simply unecht, künstlich, or scheinbar/Schein - IMO.

How about: "...von der höchst heuchlerischen Welt..."

(It's always difficult finding a good equivalent for (i.e. not only transposing but improving) a stilted source phrase.)
