Explanation:
I think this is a case of sloppiness in the original. Judging on the way a number of graphics programs work (e.g. MS Photo Editor), the author means the "mouse wheel", in German often called the "Scrollrad"

There is no reason to think he or she means the ball inside mouses of older design that rolls on the working surface, or the little trackball on the back of the new Apple Mighty Mouse.
