Ethernet cables have multiple wires inside them. Some are dedicated to sending; some are dedicated to receiving. A crossover cable is a special cable in which the receive and send wires cross so that the sending leads on one device can directly connect to the receiving leads on the other device. When WatchGuard encloses a crossover cable with its products, it is typically color-coded red for easy identification.

Crossover-Kabel ist der Begriff, den ich selbst in der Praxis am häufigsten verwendet und gehört habe. Crosskabel als Kurzform oder auch gekreuztes Kabel (seltener) sind ebenfalls gebräuchlich.

Als Crosskabel oder Crossoverkabel bezeichnet man in der Computernetz-Technik (LAN-Technik) ein achtadriges Twisted-Pair-Kabel, das zwar auf jeder Seite einen RJ45-Stecker besitzt, wobei allerdings in einem Stecker gewisse Kabeladern vertauscht werden (engl. to cross: kreuzen). Es wird benötigt, um z. B. zwei Computer direkt miteinander zu verbinden.
