In the UK a brownfield site is defined as "previously developed land" that has the potential for being redeveloped. It is often (but not always) land that has been used for industrial and commercial purposes and is now derelict and possibly contaminated.

Explanation:
Wie schon beschrieben, sind das Standorte, an denen sich Industrie angesiedelt hatte, die womöglich kontaminiert sind und die zwecks Neuentwicklung saniert werden. Bisweilen werden "brownfield sites" auch einfach als "Altlasten" bezeichnet.

Explanation:
These sites are also known as Brachflächen. I find this better because it does not require previous industrial use, as Industriebrache does. As you point out, a brownfield site has not necessarily been subject to industrial use.
