English term or phrase:Office of Public Works
im Internet finde ich zahlreiche Einträge mit "Amt für Öffentliche Arbeiten", aber es ist doch wohl "Öffentlicher Bau" gemeint. Behörde für Öffentlichen Bau oder so. Weiß jemand, für was die zuständig sind? Es geht um Irland
Ivo says that these "Ämter" are called "Staats-"-something in Bavaria because they are the responsibility of the "Länder". Just in case anyone is wondering why they are not called "Länder"-something, this must be because two of the German Federal states are in fact a Freistaat not a Land : Freistaat Bayern und Freistaat Sachsen (I think).
The relevance to our present question: Are the "Public Works" in Ireland the responsibility of the country as a whole or of some smaller political entity?
ich denke eher an einen Begriff mit Behörde. Verwaltung klingt mir zu wenig aktiv, und offenbar - dahingehend meine Frage - ist dieses Amt eine Art ausführendes Organ eines Ministeriums bzw. der Regierung auf staatlicher Ebene, also eines Bauministeriums, Infrastrukturministeriums oder ähnlichem. Tiefbau greift sicher zu kurz. Staatliche Baubehörde finde ich nicht schlecht.
After reading Kerstin's reference, the Office of Public Works in Ireland is charged with much greater tasks than the OPWs I know from the USA. I believe, once this question is closed, a glossary entry with differentiation should be made. OPW(USA)=Tiefbauamt, OPW(Ireland)=Staatsbauverwaltung, OPW(UK)=??

Ich würde aber trotzdem beides schreiben, also

Asker: Ich war auch auf deren Webseite, aber auch wenn sie sich selbst so nennen, finde ich das Amt für öffentliche Arbeiten irgendwie danebenübersetzt
Explanation: In Deutschland sind öffentliche Bauvorhaben (um die geht es ja laut Definition von "Office of Public Works" in 'Wiki) Sache der Länder. Die aber werden, wie sehr schön die entsprechende Seite von Bayern zeigt, "Staatsbauverwaltung" genannt. Die hat alle öffentlichen Bauvorhaben unter sich.
