English term or phrase: grade

A entspricht 4.0

Explanation:
GP = grade points
GPA ist höchstwahrscheinlich grade point average = Durchschnittsnote / Notendurchschnitt / durchschnittliche Benotungspunkte

explanation

Explanation:
I don't know how they get to CL, but CE could be credits earned.
The thing missing in the puzzle is "credits attempted" and "credits earned". This works as follows. Let's say you sign up for 5 credit course. The final grade is a B (3.0). You attempted 5 credits and in this case you earned 5 credits, amounting to 5 x 3.0 = 15 grade points. In an other example, lets say you signed up for a 2 credit course and failed (F). in this case you attempted 2 credits and earned 0. Your GPA for these two courses would be 15 divided by 7 (5+2, total number attempted) = 2.14, which is a "C" grade.
In order to graduate from a program you need a certain total number of grade points, lets say 240 or so semester credits for a BA in anything. A 5 credit course typically equates to 5 contact hours per week in class, or 10 contact hours for lab.

agree  Johanna Timm, PhD: stimmt.

neutral  Heidi Stone-Schaller: that's not how it worked at the college I went to. Your grade didn't depend on the type of class you chose.
18 hrs
  -> Heidrun: In the US at least, your grade depends entirely on how well you perform in class, but your GPA for a single semester is more heavily effected (positively or adverdely) by 5 credit hour courses, then it is by 2 credit hour classes.
