The approach temperature is the difference between the saturated-water temperature in an evaporating section and the incoming feedwater temperature. The approach temperature influences the amount of surface required for an economizer section, with exponentially increasing amounts required for very low approach temperatures.
Current HRSG economizers have approach temperatures in the 15º to 25ºF range.
