Es geht um eine Magnetpulverprüfung bei Eisenbahnzeug.

"In the case of a the yoke method, the magnetization is achieved by a pair of electromagnets, or by a pair of permanent magnets or by a "horse-shoe" permanent magnet. In each of these cases the opposing poles are placed *astride* the area to be tested."

Kann mir jemand sagen, wie "astride" hier zu verstehen beziehungsweise adäquat zu übersetzen ist?

Explanation:
I don't know if this is the optimum German term, but "astride" means "on opposite sides of" in English. Not the best word to have chosen, and hardly "technical" vocabulary, but there you are...
