Für das Vorgehen beim Zusammenbau von Ventil und Antrieb interessiert der Durchmesser der Antriebswelle mit eingelegter Passfeder, weil man die ja nicht hinterher, wenn man alles eingefädelt hat, nachträglich einlegen kann.

Explanation:
The diameter has nothing to do with it.
Because the shaft is circular, there must be some means to prevent it slipping when torque is applied. One method is to fit a key. This is a rectangular metal finger, half of which slips into a groove in the shaft, and the other half slips into a groove in the driving wheel, gear, or whatever. This is simply a mechanical lock between the two components.
