to support ist etwas kräftiger (wie Fundament usw.) als das französische 'supporter' einschließlich seiner Varianten "tu es unsupportable" usw.

In einem dicken Webster steht für das Verb (eigenartigerweise steht dort nichts über 'support' als Nomen):
to support: to bear the weight of (esp. from underneath); hold in position; kepp from falling, sinking etc.; to bear or sustain; erst 4) to serve to uphold a theory etc.; 5) to provide with maintenance (supporter usw);

Jetzt kommt doch das Nomen (das wir hier haben):

1) support = the act of supporting
2) One who or that which supports (deutsch 'Gspusi'? - das ist meine etwas anzügliche Bemerkung)
3) Subsistance - besondere Synonyme unter subsidy (=Subvention, auch Sozialleistungen).
