Definition from Wikipedia: A locavore is someone who eats food grown or produced locally or within a certain radius such as 50, 100, or 150 miles (240 km). The locavore movement encourages consumers to buy from farmers’ markets or even to produce their own food, with the argument that fresh, local products are more nutritious and taste better. Locally grown food is an environmentally friendly means of obtaining food, since supermarkets that import their food use more fossil fuels and non-renewable resources.

Eigentlich ein Übersetzungsvorschlag, aber mir ist es schlicht zu blöd, die Vorschlagsmaschinerie mit ihren, Entschuldigung, dusseligen Fundstellen-Nachweispflichten zu durchlaufen, die ich in diesem Fall auch wenig zweckdienlich finde. Offenbar ist das Ziel hier, einen Ausdruck zu finden, den es noch nicht gibt - derartige Kreativität ist ja manchmal gefragt. Zur Sache also: "Regionalköstler" habe ich noch nirgendwo gelesen oder googeln können, aber das Muster "-köstler" ist im Deutschen produktiv ("Naturköstler", "Bioköstler"), und man könnte es in diesem Fall ja mal wieder damit probieren. (Schließlich waren einige Neologismen aus der Werbesprache - "Unkaputtbar" - "ohne kompliziert" ja schließlich auch zumindest in Grenzen erfolgreich, um hier einen etwas gewagten Vergleich zu ziehen.)
Mr. Rosendahl, apologies if you felt provoked by my comment. I admit I don't follow the OUP/USA "Word of the Year" awards and the fact that I have never come across "locavore" may just be my tunnel vision. This may also be BRIT_ENG/ US_ENG thang - Ive only heard one of the other candidates (cloudware) either. There is however a relevant cultural abyss here - As Europe tends not to be so junk-food fixated, we also tend not to be so determined in our searching for alternatives. The concept of "slow-food" and even local produce in the home and in restaurants is old and well established in Europe - The term "locavore" smacks to me too much of "have you bought my latest book" fad-marketing. That may just reflect my prejudices however. If you look carefully at the "Leo" discussion, they also a) reject "Selbstversorger" and b) state that there is no such movement in Germany, so its not just me :-). Personally, I would be happy if it stayed that way.
Mr. Morgan, I don't agree with your assertion: First of all, the "slow-food movement" is a global one (and one that started in Italy, Europe, not in the US). Secondly, locavore is the "New Oxford American Dictionary" word of the year 2007 (http://blog.oup.com/2007/11/locavore/) and, hence, not just an "ism" used by some excentrics, but rather, a widely used term. would try and make something as simple as buying local produce into an "ism". Im certain (and glad) there isnt a German word for this and would personally welcome the oppotunity to not translate it, not use it and hope it dies with the faddy "I lost weight by being a Locavore[tm]!" websites.
Anyone seen the Dilbert cartoon about what they did with his anti-gravity formula? Same sort of concept.
