Das Prinzip des "Wasserfalls" stellt sicher, dass das sauberste Wasser nur in der nachgeordneten Stufe des Prozesses/Verfahrens, also während des Spülvorgangs, verwendet wird, während es später in den vorgeschalteten Stufen der Vor- und Hauptwäsche (des nächsten Zyklus) wieder verwendet wird.
(eventuell könnte man auch sagen "im 2. / 1. Teil des Prozesses")

Explanation:
In der Verfahrenstechnik (und auch in der Betriebswirtschaft) bedeutet *upstream* den Anfang einer Produktions- oder Prozesskette, während *downstream* das Ende einer solchen meint. Man spricht jeweils von "upstream processing" und "downstream processing", um sich auf bestimme Anlagenbereiche oder Produktionsprozesse zu beziehen. Diese Bezeichnungen werden besonders häufig in der Biotechnologie und der pharmazeutischen Verfahrenstechnik gebraucht, wobei dann für den Upstream-Bereich typisch Rohstoffaufbereitung und unmittelbar damit verknüpfte Prozessstufen gemeint sind und für den Downstream-Bereich typisch Abtrennungs- und Reinigungsverfahren ("Aufreinigung" des erzeugten Produktes).
Die beiden englischen Termini sollten nicht übersetzt werden, denn sie bezeichnen Begriffe, die in der internationalen Fachwelt bestens etabliert sind.
