In der Betriebsanleitung für eine Maschine zur Käseherstellung heißt es unter "Definitionen":
"***Loaf***: Cut off portion of multiple slices of cheese, usually approximately 30 cm long. The loafs are produced at the cut off unit."
Ist das ein "Laib", eine "Stange" oder etwas ganz anderes?

In der Definition von loaf bei Wiki, heißt es u. a. oblong, was wiederum rechteckig bedeutet und hier deutlich besser passt.

Ich stelle mir darunter ein kastenförmiges Stück Käse vor.
Also, wenn Laib, dann in Anlehnung an Susannes Kommentar: rechteckiger Laib, damit man nicht bei viereckig an ein Quadrat denkt.

Ich dachte eigentlich auch, dass ein Laib rund sein muss; aber das kann sich die industrielle Fertigung mittlerweile auch geändert haben. Hier nennen sie das Ding jedenfalls "viereckiger Laib" ;-)

Es geht hier ja nicht darum, ob du für loaf kein anderes Wort alls Laib kennst, sondern darum, ob es Sinn macht im Deutschen. Und wenn ich mir die Form, die hier beschrieben wird visualisiere, dann ist das bestimmt kein Laib.

Das kann überhaupt gar kein Laib sein. Schon allein deshalb nicht, weil jedes Loaf zwei glatte Schnittkanten hat und ansonsten wohl auch eine eher homogene Form aufweist und nicht die typische Wölbung Richtung Mitte. Stelle mir das eher wie 30 cm lange "Würste" vor, oder eben Stangen, wie von Klaus selbst vorgeschlagen.

An die Maschine kann ein "stacker" (habe ich mit "Stapler" übersetzt) angeschlossen werden. Dazu heißt es: "which receives the multi-slice loaf of cheese from the cut off unit and places one ***loaf*** upon another to make a final ***loaf*** of a greater number of slices."
Passt dazu wirklich "Laib"?

ein Laib ist per Definition ein rundes oder ovales Stück Käse oder Brot,
Wie man aus runden Formen mehrere (!) 30 cm lange Stücke schneiden kann, ist mir ein Rätsel. Ich denke eher, dass loaf hier ein Rechteckform hat. Das passt eindeutig besser zur Verarbeitung von industriellen Schmelzkäseprodukten. Der "Abfall" bei der Produktion geschnittener Stücke wäre unproduktiv, weil nicht maschinengerecht.

Explanation:
Ein Laib ist wirklich etwas Rundes oder Ovales und wenn ich "rechteckiger Laib" sagen muss, dann doch lieber Stange.
Etymologisch heißt Laib= Brot, wie auch früher mal "Loaf"=bread (übriigens im Pl sind es "loaves").

Im Wörterbuch steht "loaf - a quantity of bread that is shaped and baked in one piece and usually sliced before being eaten."

Meat loaf (der ja oft eckig ist, je nach Form) bezeichnet nicht die Form sondern den Inhalt, so ähnlich wie LeberKÄSE.

Damit will ich sagen, dass "Loaf" nicht die Form beschreibt wie es "Laib" tut.
