English term or phrase: to bat 1,000
"I know as well as anyone can how slippery these standards aret to hold to. Although I have given it my best try, I can't claim to have batted 1,000. Yet, as I look back at three decades of writing cookbooks, and at the hundreds of recipes I produced hoping to illustrate the Italian way to cook, as I understand it, I am relieved to see how many of those dishes approach the mark."

Seems to be a baseball-related translation, but I just don't quite grasp the exact meaning.

eine Koryphäe auf dem Gebiet sein.
Explanation:

neutral  Brie Vernier: Sorry, but the expression is definitely from baseball and means a player got a hit every time he was at bat -- i.e. a perfect batting average, see http://freespace.virgin.net/john.cletheroe/usa_can/lang/digi...

neutral  Teresa Reinhardt: with Brie; batting average for the season; 1,000 is perfect

Explanation:

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
neutral  Brie Vernier: see comment to Ivo - NOT cricket. They may well keep track of players who score a 1000 runs, but it isn't the origin of the expression

perfekt sein

Explanation:
since a batting average of 1,000 would be perfect (in actual fact, .500 is very good)
