Die ersten Furchungsteilungen laufen sehr langsam ab. Im Achtzellstadium kommt es zu einer Veränderung der Form, bevor es zu weiteren Teilungen kommt → Kompaktierung.
Durch die Kompaktierung der Morula kommt es zur Vergrößerung der Zellkontaktflächen. Dies wird durch Bildung von tight junctions erreicht. Diese Kompaktierung führt zur ersten Differenzierung im Mausembryo (auch Mensch). Die äußeren vier Zellen tragen Mikrovilli und werden als Trophektoderm bezeichnet. (Seite 6)
