This is how far I've come but not really sure it's right:

"apoptotic responses" bezieht sich jedenfalls auf die zellulären Antworten auf apoptotische Signale. Eine mitochondriale Apoptose gibt es ja in dem Sinne nicht, höchstens eine Mitochondrien-vermittelte Apoptose: entweder stirbt die Zelle ganz oder gar nicht.

Asker: Darf ich noch um deine deine Meinung bitten, wenn die 'response' in der Übersetzung weggelassen wird, da dies ja schon im Vorsatz impliziert ist: also so:
die für die Aktivierung oder Repression ... einer Mitochondrien-vermittelten Apoptose, ...verantwortlich sind.
