English term or phrase: State Capital v/s National Capital
How to differentiate between State Capital and National Capital?
......coz i think both are Hauptstadt. I know we can add the name of the state or country to be specific. But are there no two different words for them.

For eg.
Washington DC is the national capital of USA.
Austin is a State Capital in USA (of the state Texas).

I had also seen Landeshauptstadt (for State Capital) ....but thats only in financial context.

agree  Brie Vernier: Both of these work, too, and I prefer "Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates", but Francis' answer is also used For Bundeshauptstadt see e.g. http://www.bpb.de/themen/YQ3NZC,0,USA.html

-> Thanks, Brie! It's tax time, the annual reminder of how this government system works (federal, state AND county) so I don't see any reason why to omit one level

disagree  Nicole Schnell: Länder?//It's tricky. Each state consists of several counties with their own governments. Found a lot of adventurous translations, esp. in travel guides.

-> Tried Googling Sacramento + Landeshauptstadt? Like it or not, the German media say it.

agree  Brie Vernier: I don't like it, either, but it does appear to be common -- I tried some "lesser known" capitals: http://parapluie.de/archiv/theater/sparta/ and http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois

-> ta - I primarily suggested it because "Hauptstadt des/eines Bundesstaats" is rather long-winded
