English term or phrase: from the earth crust

Deep inside the earth's crust, the temperature is as high as 3000°C. Rock melts to form magma under this high temperature. When magma erupts (normally with gases and other pyroclastic debris) through the earth's surface it is called lava. The place where this eruption take place is a volcano. Hawaii's Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on earth. It's height is about 10 km from the earth crust, and it's volume is about 42000 cubic kilometers. It is said that largest volcano in our Solar System is the Olympus Mons on the planet Mars. It is about 27 km tall and over 520 km across. While volcanic eruptions are destructive, they benefit the Earth by adding minerals and nutrients to the soil. The lava flow from a volcano helps create and shape our landscapes when it hardens. Can you imagine how the world would be without volcanoes?

Earth crust ist nicht die eroberfläche, doch wenn ich Erdkruste schreibe, dann denkt doch jeder sofort an die Erdoberfläche. Also meine Frage: Ist hier die Höhenangabe falsch oder ist es tatsächlich die Bezeichnung für eine tiefer unter der Oberfläche liegende Schicht, und wie hieße diese dann?

Explanation:
Die Höhenangabe stimmt schon, der Mauna Loa ist zwar nur gut 4000 m hoch, aber vom Meeresspiegel aus gemessen. Die vulkanische Insel geht noch auf rund 5000 Meter (Meeres-)Tiefe runter, macht zusammen rund 10 km. Und der Begriff Erdkruste stimmt nun mal, nur wegen der naheliegenden Assoziation mit Erdoberfläche muss man sich ja nicht unbedingt was neues ausdenken, was nicht genau stimmt.
