M-A-Z: 8:26am Nov 21, 2006: Das scheint mir keine Originalbezeichnung aus einem englischsprachigen Land zu sein, habe ich Recht? Gibt es im übrigen Text Hinweise darauf, ob damit ein Teil einer größeren Organisation oder eine eigenständige Behörde gemeint ist?

I tend to think it is the Erkennungsdienst.
In German you often hear "erkannungsdienstliche Behandlung".
The Erkennungsdienst is part of the criminal dept.

neutral M-A-Z: As a rule "Erkennungsdienst" is only a unit of a larger "Bureau", but given the unusual English wording it may be what is being described here.
