Der Begriff Gläserne Decke (engl. glass ceiling) wurde in den 1980er-Jahren in den USA geprägt für das Phänomen, dass die meisten hochqualifizierten Frauen beim Aufstieg innerhalb von Unternehmen oder Organisationen auf der Ebene des mittleren Managements „hängenbleiben“ und nicht bis in die Führungsetage kommen, obwohl sie die gleichen Leistungen erbringen wie bevorzugte männliche Kollegen. Da diese Barriere unsichtbar ist, entstand der Ausdruck glass ceiling, eingedeutscht gläserne Decke. Seit den 1980er-Jahren sind zu diesem Phänomen international zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Studien erschienen, sowohl von Wirtschaftswissenschaftlern als auch von Soziologen. Im erweiterten Sinne spricht man auch von „gläserner Decke“ im Hinblick auf die eingeschränkten Aufstiegschancen von ethnischen Minderheiten oder bekennenden Homosexuellen. |
