Background: In response to input from our participants and external evaluations of our academic programs, the Marshall Center has decided to combine the former 15-week Executive Program and the 9-week Leaders Course into a single 12-week course of study for military officers in the ranks of Lieutenant through Colonel, as well as Ministry of Defense civilians, diplomats, national law enforcement officers, and officials from other ministries that deal with domestic and international security matters. Typically more than 30 countries are represented in each class. Upon arrival, all participants undertake a common core curriculum consisting of six one-week “modules”: Foundations of Defense and Security Studies; Contemporary Security Threats and Challenges; State Power in International Security; International Institutions and Security; International Norms; and National Security Processes. Each module consists of extensive scholarly and professional readings, lectures delivered to the entire class, and small group seminar sessions led by Marshall Center faculty members.

What I mean by this is that you'd end up with 'monsters' such as "Erg�nzungsstudium f�r fortgeschrittene sicherheitspolitische Fragen/Fragestellungen", which I'd be very reluctant to recommend.

IMHO this is a typical example of a translation not working if done 1-1. I'd think that, by extension, the "Aufbau-" part also implies the sophisticated nature of the issues being dealt with. Turning the German round would complicate matters even more.

Steffen, While the course is studied at a higher level than basic/intermediate, "Advanced" refers more to the issues being discussed rather than this being a type of course that's a professional development, or qualifications improvement course.

So IMO we're basically thinking along the same lines. Your "higher level" goes together with my remark about accomplished professionals trying to develop their knowledge (and career) over and above their current achievements.

Yes, that's exactly what my suggestions "Aufbau-", "Erg�nzungs-" or "weiterf�hrend" reflect. In German, you wouldn't use "fortgeschritten" in this context (although formally correct).
