More context would (as ever) be helpful, aber es hört sich schon wie in einer Zeit vor der Moderne an.
Irgendwie war mein erster Gedanke dabei "während/bei Zusammenstösse(n)"

Gegenvorschlag:
Es geht ja darum, dass Soldaten keine Erlaubnis hatten, die Ausbildung zu verlassen. *Nicht einmal für/zur Verlobung(sfeier)*.

Finde ich ja bezeichnend, dass "engagement" sowohl Kampf/Gefecht, wie auch "Verlobung" bedeutet. ;-)

neutral  xxxFrancis Lee: "engaged" kann man ja auch mit "besetzt" übersetzen (telefonisch sowie WC-technisch); hier deutet m.E. nichts auf eine Verlobung, dafür aber alles auf einen militärischen Zusammenhang

  -> Auch du hast hier vollkommen recht, auch mit deinem Hinweis auf "Formation". Da hat mir das Spanische dazwischengefunkt. ;-) und das hat dann wohl auch zu meiner Fehlinterpretation geführt. Ok, aus Fehlern lernt man. Herzlichen Dank jedenfalls. :-)
