Der Begriff 'religiös' ist meiner Ansicht nach zu eng und wird im nächsten Satz auch gleich noch mal gebraucht, 'geistlich' wäre noch enger, weil es sich nur auf die Vertreter der Religion bezieht. 'Geistig' ist eigentlich die genaueste Übersetzung von 'spiritual' und auch der Begriff mit der weitesten Bedeutung. Hier sind sowohl der Katholizismus als auch der schweizer Protestantismus mit gemeint. Deswegen auch mein Vorschlag 'Landschaft', der über die jeweilige Umgebung hinaus weist. |

Explanation:
... zwar nur ein kleiner Unterschied, aber "Umfeld" gefällt mir persönlich in diesem Zusammenhang besser.
Ob spirituell, religiös oder geliches Umfeld ist, finde ich, Geschmackssache bzw. kontextbedingt.
Ansonsten, wie Kai, oder man könnte auch noch sagen:
Wie stellte sich ihm dieses ... Umfeld dar?
Wie stellte sich dieses ... Umfeld für ihn dar?

Aber warum eigentlich nicht auch einfach wörtlich:
"spirituelles Terrain" - da schwingt dann wenigstens auch gleich die Bedeutung von "abgesteckt / begrenzt" (siehe boundaries) und "gefährliches Terrain" (siehe obstacles) mit.
Nicht IMMER ist eine erzwungene Übersetzung die beste Lösung...
