Aus der ursprünglichen volkswirtschaftlichen Bedeutung als optimale Kapitalverwendung bzw. Verteilung von Finanzmitteln nach ihrer bestmöglichen Verwendung, in der Betriebswirtschaftslehre eingesetzt zur Beschreibung von Kapitalumschichtungsprozessen im Rahmen der Innenfinanzierung. Bei der Allokation findet im Gegensatz zur Thesaurierung kein Mittelzufluss, sondern lediglich eine Mittelumschichtung statt.
