Hedge funds have produced long term returns, after fees, which are comparable to the return on equities at close to half the annualised volatility. The following table shows performance and volatility figures for hedge funds after fees over the 13 and a half year period from January 1990 to June 2003. The Hedge Fund Index delivered a higher return than equities with about half the volatility of returns. There are however some biases in the hedge fund index calculation and a truer performance of hedge funds allowing for these biases would bring them closer to that of equities over this period.
