English term or phrase:to buy out policyholders from their inherited estate
Plans by Aviva **to buy out policyholders from their 'inherited estate'** should be decided in the courts today.

Controversial plans by Aviva to buy out policyholders from their "inherited estate" should be decided in the courts today.
The UK's largest insurer, which was formerly known as Norwich Union, has a surplus fund of £1.2billion built up when policyholders die and can't be traced. It also includes money held back from with-profits policyholders rather than paid out in bonuses.
The company has offered a million customers sweeteners - averaging £500 - in return for surrendering their rights to the fund.
Aviva originally said it would pay out £1billion, but halved the amount, blaming tumbling stock markets, which have slashed the value of the fund.
Danke an alle! Also ich denke, Annettes Vorschlag ("verwaiste Vermögenswerte") passt hier. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Myth busting!
The inherited estate is money
that past policyholders have
not claimed
No. These are referred to as
orphan assets. Orphan assets
are not included in the inherited
estate, because they remain part
of our obligation to policyholders
and are accounted for as such.

Mal schauen, was die Versicherungsexperten dazu meinen.
