neutral  Irene Schlotter, Dipl.-Übers.: Witziges Detail: Früher wurde besagtes Schmiergeld als'Handsalbe' bezeichnet. Zu einem Schreiben legte man eine 'Handsalbe', und ... voilà!

Explanation:
In terms of what you say - I would stick to the Schmiergeld but "handshake money" can also refer to money given to say goodbye to somebody - a sort of "golden handshake" in the sense of an abfindung. Mainly paid to the CEOs of this world. But again, as you said it was more in terms of bribery, Schmiergeld or Bestechungsgeld would suit best.

Explanation:
as in "golden hanshake", a compensation, usually high, paid in cash, in kind or rights in the event of the termination of a contract.

That is the first thing that comes up to me, since bribe is illegal.

But, one again, we don't have the full context...
