Es geht um einen Vertrag zwischen Bauunternehmer und Eigentümer. Unter dem Punkt "Warranty" taucht auf einmal dieser Satz auf, den ich schon zwanzig Mal gelesen habe und irgendwie nicht verstehe:
The Contractor further warrants that the Work shall be **free from material defects not intrinsic in the design** or materials required in the Contract Documents.
Ist hier das "not" zu viel, oder wie ist der Teil in ** zu verstehen?

Nachdem ich mit Volkmar die Kommentarfunktion überstrapaziert habe, hier noch mein ergänzender Vorschlag.

Begründung:
Ich lese "material defects" als erste Sinneinheit und "material" als Adjektiv ("wesentliche Mängel"). Die zweite Sinneinheit ist m.E. "not intrinsic in the design or materials..." (Abweichung von Volkmars Antwort - erst *hier* kommen m.E. die "Materialien" ins Spiel).

...so steht es dort. Das "not" ist nicht überflüssig.

Im Klartext: Der Unternehmer haftet dem Bauherrn (Eigentümer) für Materialfehler, welche nicht auf Planung/Entwurf/Konstruktion des Hauses zurückzuführen sind.

Wie Steffen richtig anmerkt, habe ich in meiner Antwort das \"NICHT\" vergessen (ist in der Erläuterung zur Antwort enthalten). Also:

Ich habe Steffen per E-Mail eben gebeten, seinen Vorschlag doch als Antwort abzugeben. Er weist nämlich ganz richtig darauf hin, dass in dem Satz zwei Mal \"material\" vorkommt, nämlich \"material defects\" und \"not intrinsic in design or material\". Daher steht das erste \"material\" für wesentlich/erheblich usw., das zweite für Materialfehler.

  -> Ich hatte auch Zweifel wegen "material", habe dann noch einmal nachgesehen (Dietl/Lorenz etc.) und fand unter "material defects" eben dann doch die Materialfehler. Das NICHT habe ich in der Eile vergessen - Asche auf mein Haupt!
