Ist es eindeutig "du musst verstehen..." (aber dann hieße es ja "you have to understand") oder kann es auch sein, "dir ist es zu verstehen gegeben" (wörtlich) oder freier "du kannst (das) verstehen."

Explanation:
...oder 'davon ausgehen'. Ich würde das 'you' vielleicht auch eher mit 'man' übersetzen - du wirst aber natürlich besser beurteilen koennen, welcher Stil angemessen ist.

I know it is a somehow well-known phrase, but I literally had a block and I couldn't acutally find it in my Langenscheidt.
