Explanation:
That's IMHO the standing expression carrying the same idea. Application in individual cases depends a little on context, but the order wording cannot be changed. The main thing is to keep "aller guten Dinge" and "drei" in THAT order; you can toy around a bit with the verb.
Use as an insertion at any appropriate point of the main sentence.
Maximum modification you could go for would be along the lines of "aller guten dinge sind ja bekanntlich drei".

Heutiger Sinn:
Etwas mehrfach (dreimal) versuchen...
Der Ursprung liegt wahrscheinlich in der mittelalterlichen Rechtspraxis.So wurde 3mal pro Jahr Gericht (Thing, Ding) gehalten.
Ein Angeklagter war auch 3mal vorzuladen. Erschien er auch beim dritten Mal nicht zur Verhandlung, dann wurde in Abwesenheit verhandelt.
